2015 CCA Events Schedule Announced!

It’s finally here! We’ve been working quite hard on next year’s events schedule, and as you’ll see there has been a LOT happening here in the CCA office. In this email you’ll find information on all our 2015 events, including new events in both the USA and Canada. We’re pretty excited about these new events, and if you have friends or family who live in our new regions, please be sure to send them a link to this page.

Hagerty Spring Thaw
Vancouver, BC

The radio is playing Christmas carols, the malls are packed and your shopping list seems never-ending…this could only mean one thing: Hagerty Spring Thaw registration is just around the corner! Yes, the Pacific Northwest’s favourite classic car event is returning for its seventh year, and we couldn’t be more excited. We’ve been scouring the maps, and spent the fall testing new roads which haven’t been used in any of our events. The Hagerty Spring Thaw will begin on April 24th, and finish April 26th. Registration forms and entries will be uploaded onto our website Friday January 2nd, with supplementary regulations ready on December 15th. Further details on the event info page.

Hagerty Silver Summit
Denver, Colorado

While road-trippng across the USA this past spring, we entered Colorado with the intention of “pushing through” to our final destination across the state. After 20min on our first b-road, however, the plans changed and we spent three days exploring possibilities for a new event. By the end of the three days we fell in love with Colorado’s roads, and when we mentioned to our friends at Hagerty that we were thinking of Colorado, they immediately agreed it was a “must-do” event. This new event will feature our famous blend of great roads, great people and fantastic value. We’ll be starting on May 15th, at the new Hagerty Classic Car Insurance office in Denver Colorado. We’ll finish up on May 17th, having completed approximately 700 miles on some of the best tarmac roads we’ve ever discovered. Registration forms and entries will be uploaded onto our website Friday January 16th. Further event details will be ready December 15th, and will be found on the event info page.

Rush to Gold Bridge
Vancouver, BC

The Classic Car Adventures Rush to Gold Bridge is our mixed Tarmac and Gravel event. For 2015 we’ve moved the event to the end of May, giving us better weather over remote mountain passes. 2015’s running of the Rush To Gold Bridge will feature a lightly-organized style of road trip, designed for the budget traveler looking for adventure. Open to 1989 and earlier classics, we’ll explore some of the best and smoothest gravel roads BC has to offer. Further event details can be found on the event info page.

The “Event With No Name”
Washington / Oregon

While we certainly love exploring the roads of British Columbia, we thought we’d take our blend of events a little further south into the great roads of Washington and Oregon. This budget-minded event follows the traditional style of our famous Spring Thaw, and is one of the best ways to close out the motor season. We also thought we’d have some fun, and ask you to help us name the the new fall event with a contest! We’re offering a 50% discount as a prize to the winner of our naming contest. Full details, and entry to the naming contest, can be found on the event info page.

Maple Mille
Toronto, ON

Traditionally at CCA we think of mountains as the ultimate source of twisty roads and fantastic views. Glaciers on the east-coast, however, created thousands of lakes which early road builders had to go around, and around, creating some absolutely fantastic twisty roads. The Muskoka Lakes, Canadian Shield region and the Laurentian Mountains each serve a unique blend of twists, turns and scenery. The history of Upper Canada and early cottaging has also created some fantastic resorts and destinations, all a part of this new event for CCA.  Registration for the event will open this winter, with further event information found on the event info page.

Spring Thaw Entry Up for Grabs…

Have you made plans to attend the NASKARZ (Never Again Steal Karz) fundraising event this week? If you haven’t, perhaps we can encourage you! Late last week Classic Car Adventures agreed to donate an entry for the 2015 Hagerty Spring Thaw Classic Car Adventure to the evening’s silent auction. This is a chance to have your 2015 Spring Thaw participation guaranteed, before anyone else!

NASKARZ (Never Again Steal KarZ) is a dynamic program for high-risk youth in Vancouver’s Inner City. Created by the community to deal with the high impact of auto-theft, the program works with youth to provide positive peer support, social activities and the skills needed to work in the auto mechanics field. Youth who have been involved in auto theft and joyriding work alongside car enthusiasts, kids interested in car culture, police and youth workers to learn the fundamentals of vehicle repair.

NASKARZ is finishing off another great year with a fundraiser at the beautiful Roundhouse Community Centre in Vancouver. Our Kids, Cars and Cops: What could go wrong? event on October 28th, 2014, organized in partnership with Vancouver Police Foundation, hopes to raise $60,000 for the 2015 NASKARZ season. We invite you to join us on this date, celebrate the past successes and support our young people in the future.

Join us for a meet and greet with participants from 4:00 to 6:00pm (all ages); from 6:00pm onwards we are hosting an (adults only) with wine, refreshments, speakers anda Silent Auction!

Tickets for Tuesday’s event are still available, by following this link here. If you’re unable to attend, but wish to make a donation, you do so at the same link. Charitable Tax Receipts available for donations over $20 from Ray-Cam Community Association #10787 4299 RR0001

We look forward to hosting the lucky winner of our Silent Auction donation!

2014 Sea to Sky Thanksgiving Run

It’s that time of year once again! The Annual Thanksgiving run is just two weeks away. This free event raises food and monetary donations for the Squamish Food Bank, while at the same time giving us all one last chance to drive our classic cars together this season. For full details on the event, including meeting times and location, head over to www.classiccaradventures.com/events/thanksgiving-day-sea-to-sky-run/

Saturday: Classic Car Appreciation Day

Official Declaration

Official Declaration

Summertime motoring is in full swing for Classic Car owners, but this year things are a just a wee bit more special in British Columbia. Earlier this year, the B.C. Government proclaimed July as “Collector Car Appreciation Month”, and July 12th as the designated “Collector Car Appreciation Day”. Here at the CCA offices, we felt it appropriate to commemorate the date with an informal gathering of Classic Car enthusiasts.

What: A casual meetup with fellow classic car owners and enthusiasts. Start your weekend off right, and join us this Saturday at the Park and Tilford mall in North Vancouver for a summertime ‘Cars and Coffee’ get together. Enjoy a coffee and the company of fellow car nuts and we celebrate a government declaration we can all appreciate! Open to all Classic,  Collector and Retro Cars*, we expect there will be a wide variety of cars to appreciate!

When: Saturday July 12th 2014, 8:00-10:00am.

Where: Meeting at 8:30am in the Park and Tilford parking lot, gather in the South-West corner of the parking lot, or wherever there is parking available. [MAP].

* Now, you might wonder..what designates a “Classic, Collector or Retro-Car?”  For an event such as this one, we prefer to leave the interpretation fairly wide open, you never know what sort of vehicles might show up. Certainly if your vehicle is made before 1979 it qualifies as a Classic. If your car was made between 1980 and 1989, and is eligible for Collector plates in BC, it definitely qualifies as a Collector car. “Retro Cars” is our designation for vehicles of interest, which don’t fit in the first two categories. Perhaps you have a modified vehicle which can’t get collector plates? Or perhaps it’s an early 90’s classic, which hasn’t quite made the year range. Truthfully, we’re all car people at heart. If you’re a car-nut like us, we’re not going to turn you away. This is about Collector Car Appreciation, simple as that.

Road Exploration – Join the fun!

I’ve been living in BC for about nine and a half years now, and have had the pleasure of driving many of the great roads in this province. Between our own Classic Car Adventures’ events, coaching Mountain Biking or rallying with the West Coast Rally Association…I sometimes feel like I’ve seen it all. I’ve been as far North as Smithers, all the way to Tofino and as far East as the Alberta border. I once tried to highlight all the roads I’ve driven on a Provincial map, but it simply ended up soggy with ink and unreadible. Despite all of this, there are still roads untraveled…and it’s driving me crazy!

R2GB_2012_0277prep_WEBSome of my “must try” roads are going to require a significant amount of pre-planning. I’ve always wanted to drive to the Yukon, why? Just to say I’ve done it. I’ve heard the road to Bella Coola and back is incredible…but that’s not exactly a day trip from Squamish. My ultimate adventure is a story for another time, but lets just say I haven’t tried it yet for fear of having to leave a Beetle buried deep, VERY deep, in the BC backwoods. So while some of the roads on my list are perhaps overly adventurous, some are just a morning away.

Case in point: The Highline.

HighlineRoad

This potential gem links the community of D’arcy (North of Pemberton) with Seton Portage, a community about 25km West of Lillooet. Officially named “The Douglas Trail Road”, it was finally ruled a Provincial Highway in a court decision back in Feb 2013.  I’ve been paying close attention over the years on Motorcycle forums, to figure out when the best time to try the road is, and this is the year! From the un-confirmed reports I’ve read, the road is quite a bit better than previous years, smoother then the Hurley, and should be doable in a classic car. Since adventures such as this one are more fun, and safer, with friends…I’m inviting you along!

Vehicle Eligability
I’m bringing my classic car, but feel free to bring your modern day vehicle if you like. I already know we’ve got a Ford Focus & an approaching-classic Honda along for the trip. I think we can be open to Adventure bikes as well, but would like to discuss mixing cars and bikes with the riders first to ensure we’re as safe as possible.

Important Note:
Please note that this is not an official CCA event, but just a group of friends getting together for some back country road exploration. There will be no sweep, and instructions will be a sheet of Google Map directions (if Dave remembers to print them off).

Packing List
If you’re planning on attending, you’d be nuts not to have the following with you:

  • Warning Triangle (30cm reflective sides)
  • Tow Strap
  • Spare Tire (I don’t recommend a space saver spare, at the very least throw a full size one in the trunk)
  • Tool Kit
  • Basic spares
  • Minimum 2 Gal spare gas tank.

When
– Saturday June 14th, email the link below for timing and schedule.

Lastly, to ensure that we don’t leave without you. Please email Dave to confirm you’ll be meeting in Squamish at the North Petro Canada on Saturday morning.

  1. Dave Hord – 1979 VW 1302s
  2. John Hinde – Ford Focus Wagon
  3. Tony Latham – Honda Civic Rally Car
  4. Jos Van Berckel  – BMW 1200 Adventure Bike
  5. Regien Van Berckel  – BMW 1200 Adventure Bike
  6. Mark and Jeff Dykstra – Ford Cortina or Dodge Dakota

2014 Classic Car Events

CCA-Newsletter-Master

Our latest newsletter has just gone out to the CCA Mailing list. If you’ve managed to miss the mailing, we’ve included a copy of it here. If you want to add yourself to our mailing list, simply use this easy form. The newsletter is sent out roughly six times a year, and is only used when we’ve got important things to tell you about. The mailing list is the best way to find out about when registration for our various events is opening.

If you’re like us, the time between Spring Thaw and the next automotive adventure seems too long! Our classics are washed, waxed and just itching to have their legs stretched. Whether you’re looking for a 3-day adventure like our Fall Freeze, or something free on a weekly basis…we have it here. Below is the list of events we’ve marked off on our Calendar, perhaps you’d like to join us?!

We’re doing our best to only email you when we’ve got a lot of important things to say, so for regular updates on entry opening or other information, be sure to watch the CCA website and/or Facebook page. Here’s the information from our current newsletter:

2014 Fall Freeze

The Fall Freeze is our 100% tarmac event which features fantastic destinations, more stops together as a group and our signature take on “great roads”. This year we’ll be meeting in Kelowna for the start on September 19th, and running to September 21st. Registration forms will be uploaded to our website June 15th. Further event information can be found on the info page.

Rush To Gold Bridge

The Classic Car Adventures Rush to Gold Bridge is our mixed Tarmac and Gravel event. While the route book will follow our choices for the best of both surfaces, the included supplementary maps will highlight some Tarmac alternatives, where available. The Rush to Gold Bridge is open to 1989 and earlier classics. 1980-89 vehicles simply need organizer approval. Registration for the R2GB will uploaded to our website June 15th. Payment for Fall Freeze, if you’re doing both events, can be offset so the car budget isn’t hit too much this summer. Event information page.

July 12th – Classic Car Appreciation Day

Mark your calendars, and keep the date free! B.C. Legislators have designated July as Classic Car Appreciation month, with July 12th being designated as the official “Classic Car Appreciation Day” for 2014. We’re busy working away on a Classic Car related event which you won’t want to miss! Details of this Vancouver area event will be announced in the next few weeks. Details will be announced on our Facebook page and here on the CCA website.

Other Vancouver Area options this season:

Rallye de Chilliwack – September 6th

Our good friend (and fellow Classic Car Nut) Bruce, runs a great rally event every September with the Classic European Car Club. This isn’t a high speed or math-intensive TSD rally, and it’s 100% on pavement. Registration is only $25, and it’s a hoot of an event. The event is limited to 25 cars, and registration is now open!  http://classiceuropeancarclub.com/rallyedechilliwack.html

Road Exploration- June 14th

We’ve heard rumours that there is a great gravel road hidden North of Pemberton, with a restaurant roughly mid-afternoon. Dave intends to find out! Curious to join him for a little road exploration? There’s no cost, we’ll all get to drive the Duffy…and theres a good chance of getting lost once or twice. The perfect adventure for a Saturday! Mixed tarmac and gravel roads, open to any car, truck or jeep (modern included). Meeting in Squamish at 8:45am, with return to Squamish estimated at 8pm including stops for food and breaks. Check out the information page and email Dave for meeting time and location.

Cars and Coffee – 2nd Saturday

Every month during the summer, in Vancouver at least, Weissach Cars and Coffee happens down at the Spanish Banks Park. We’ll do our best to post up a reminder on our website and Facebook page every monday before the event. The last few events have seen a great mix of Classic Cars, many of which were brought by our CCA friends. 2nd Saturday of every month, 8am to 10pm. Map to the Location

Jellybean Car Show- Canada Day

The Jellybean Autocrafters Car show and Canada Day Celebration is back on July 1st! Open to cars, trucks and motorcycles of all types…it’s a HUGE event which goes from 10am to 3pm. This free to enter and attend event features live bands, barbeque and tons of great cars and motorcycles. Details for the event can be found here.

Revscene.net Thursday meets
…every Thursday

Alright, so modern day imports and supercars might not be our regular flavour, but these meets have grown to become the biggest weekly happening in Vancouver. We’ve noticed this year that quite a few classics have started to appear on a weekly basis as well. If you love all things automotive, they’re definitely worth checking out. Undercover police presence is high – So you’re protected against hooliganism, and should avoid doing your own burnouts. They meet every Thursday Night at Burnaby’s Market Crossing shopping center (Marine Way & Bryne Road). 8:30pm to the wee early hours! Map to Market Crossing

Porsche Parts Help

While Bob was working away on the initial Inspection of Valdy, the Porsche 912, Dave was working behind the scenes and ordered the Porsche certificate of authenticity. This piece allows us to determine the cars originality, build specs from the factory and other information which is helpful to a restoration. We are certainly thankful to have another piece of Valdy’s story fall into place.

RWM & Co, along with Classic Car Adventures, believes that rolling restorations don’t have to bleed the owner dry or break up your marriage. With careful planning, skilled craftsmanship, a thrifty Scottish parts scout and a network of friends, it is most certainly possible to deliver the car of your dreams without breaking the bank. With that in mind, we are wondering if we can’t call on you, our fellow car friends, to help us complete the car and de-clutter your houses and workshops at the same time. Think of it like a personal ad for the car…

Hi, I’m Valdy. My papers say I’m 47, but don’t let that fool you – on the inside, I’m no more than a young and spry 25. I like long drives on twisty roads, exploring unchartered territory, and taking my friends out for the afternoon. I may look a little worse for wear right now, but after my tune-up they tell me I’ll be running better than I ever have. Can you help me get back on the road? I need some new-to-me parts to help me get my second lease on life and become a more improved version of myself.

In all seriousness, if you or someone you know might be able to help us bring back a piece of Canadian history, we’d be most grateful. We are looking for the following items for Valdy:
o Front bumper
o Front indicators
o Front chrome grills
o Front overrider
o Bonnet slam panel
o Bonnet
o Koni shock absorbers (or a connection to have the current ones rebuilt)
o Brake rebuild kits
o Main floor pan
o Rubber seals (all)
o Red leather interior
o Period rally/competition seats (if they’re in red leather, all the much better!)
o Race harnesses
o Carpet set
o Door lock set
o Gear box (1st and 2nd syncro mesh, or complete gear box)
o Engine parts – any!
o Exhaust system
o Heat exchangers
o Rear bumper moldings and overriders
o Engine cover grill
o 4 Tires
o Seat ratchets
o Paint & supplies
o Radio
o Chrome strip for under both doors
o Tool kit and jack
o Owners manual
o One of the chrome letters of the Porsche script…rumour is it that someone on the Spring Thaw (with a car that has the initials TT) has an original set?!?!

If you can help us out with any of the above-listed items, or put us in touch with someone who can, please email us at info@classiccaradventures .
All things considered, Valdy is in better condition than one might expect when only looking at the exterior and we are confident that we’ll have the car running and looking better than ever. Stay tuned the next installment of our Valdy Series as we delve into what it means to dismantle a car, and plan the restoration process from start to finish to avoid surprises and stay on budget.
