Thanksgiving Sea to Sky Run

With winter approaching and a chill in the air, some people take that to mean the days of driving their classic car are numbered. But don’t pull the cover over your baby too soon, because the Annual Thanksgiving Day Sea to Sky Run takes place each year on Canadian Thanksgiving Monday!  This is a quick, local, (free) and fun meetup to “give thanks” for another fine season of motoring.

What: A casual cruise and meetup with fellow classic car owners of all pre-’79 classic cars and trucks, ’80s and ’90s RetroCars (soon to be classics), and vehicles of distinction.

Drive the best part of the Sea-to-Sky Highway on a quiet holiday morning, and enjoy the company of classic car nuts before you have to head off to the in-laws for Thanksgiving dinner! We plan it so that you can be back home by midday. Some of you might have done a Sea to Sky run recently with your various car clubs, but its always fun to mix all the marques together and meet new people. And really, who can say no to the beautiful views and winding turns past ocean and mountains – especially on a holiday!

When: Thanksgiving Monday, October 14th:  8:00-11:30am. We’ll begin meeting at 8:00am, and depart at 9:00am.

S2SMeeting

Where: The Thanksgiving run will meet in North Vancouver at Capilano University, parking lot 4. Capilano University can be found using our Google Maps Link. The Run will then travel North on Hwy 99, to the Sea to Sky Gondola, south of Squamish. Here we have a large parking lot reserved for the group.

What to Bring: Please bring a non-perishable food donation for the Squamish Food Bank. We’ll collect those goods up in Squamish at the finish.

Additional Information: Many of you are aware of the vandalism in early August which resulted in the loss of the Gondola cable and cabins. In an effort to ensure continued support to the Gondola, we’re still heading north for coffee at the base.

Winter Tire Law: The winter tire law for the Sea to Sky highway will be in effect as of October 1st. Tires that are legal for driving to squamish will be full winter tires (designated with the three point mountain snow-flake symbol) OR all-season tires that are marked with an M+S on the sidewall. Please check your tires carefully, so you are aware of what you’re driving on. Dave’s 1958 Beetle and 1963 Midget, for instance, both have M+S tires which are legal to drive. The 1971 Rally Bug, however, runs an 3-season tire which doesn’t have the M+S markings.

2017 Sea to Sky Thanksgiving Run

This morning Vancouver classic car enthusiasts woke up to blue skies and sunshine, and thus a huge crowd of classic cars met up in North Vancouver for the annual Sea to Sky Thanksgiving Run. After a short parking-lot show and shine, while we waited for everyone to arrive, there was a quick driver’s meeting and we were off!

The group enjoys a drive North on the famous Sea to Sky highway, where twists and turns swap between hugging cliff edges on one side, and ocean views on the other. Along the way you may find yourself driving with a group of pre-war cars, early volkswagens, European sports cars, Italians, American Hot-Rods or an example from pretty much any enthusiast area of interest.

Our destination was the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, where the group enjoys coffee, morning pastries and a chance to really check out each other’s vehicles. As per our tradition, donations for the Squamish food bank were collected. This year we raised just over $450 in cash donations, and enough food to take up the parking space of an entire Volkswagen in the garage!

We’ll post more photos as we have them, but here’s a selection from Dave and Warwick

2015 Thanksgiving Run Photos

Well, it was a touch damp this morning. Okay, okay, it was rather wet. But still! 49 cars braved the weather and met in North Vancouver for the start of the CCA Thanksgiving Run. Following our slightly damp drive to Squamish, we stopped at the base of the Sea to Sky Gondola. We found the coffee shop not only featured fantastic Galileo Coffee, but a warm and dry spot to hang out as well!

With coffee finished, and the draw prizes all pulled, we figured we were done…but there was the small matter of push-starting a couple cars for their departure. Oh, and the Hagerty Spring Thaw…

“Hagerty Spring Thaw?”, I can hear you asking, yup! We put all the draw tags back in the hat, added the names and cars of anyone how hadn’t filled out a draw tag, and then pulled a lucky winner out of the hat. Ian Steward will have car number 1 reserved for his entry, no rushing to the mail required!

Here’s a small gallery from today:

Monday: Thanksgiving Sea to Sky Run

And really, who can say no to the beautiful views and winding turns past ocean and mountains – especially on a holiday! The drive starts in North Vancouver, with a destination of Galileo Coffee in Britannia Beach on the Sea to Sky highway. Enjoy a coffee or breakfast and the company of fellow car nuts and then return home at your leisure (or continue on to Squamish or Whistler if you wish!). In previous years we have seen between 30 to 70 cars join us on the run, with everything from “Magnum PI” Ferraris to Pebble Beach Talbots enjoying the drive. We look forward to seeing you!

This event traditionally benefits local Food Banks. Please bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Squamish Food Bank. We don’t have a lot of space to carry food back (we have a Mini, an Alfa, and a Beetle’s worth of space), so a few items each is ideal.

When: Thanksgiving Monday, October 14th, 2013 8:30-11:30am. Meet at Superstore at 8:30, depart for Britannia Beach at 9:00am.

Where: Meeting at 8:30am in the North Vancouver Superstore parking lot, near the north end of the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge. Gather in the northeast corner, near the gas station, or wherever there is parking available [MAP]. We will be departing this location at 9:00am in convoy to our destination at Galileo Coffee in Britannia Beach on the Sea to Sky highway.
